Return to printer solutions | Problems with print quality

To obtain a Print-to-file (aka .PRN)

Some applications (like MS Word) show a Print to File option in the printers list… otherwise follow the steps below:

  1. Control Panel
  2. View Devices and Printers
  3. Right click the printers icon
  4. Choose Printer Properties
  5. Ports Tab
    • Note the current port as you will have to set this back afterwards
  6. Change the port to FILE  (tick the box)
  7. Click: Apply
  8. Print the job from your application as normal
  9. In the output dialog (depending on application) enter the full path for where you wish to save the file, you must include extension .prn.  (Example Path: C:UsersusernameDesktopfilename.prn)
  10. Change the port back as noted above

The resulting .prn can be used by Technical Support to see the exact info which is sent to be printed.

In all fairness, as my question was the opposite of what MagiCard would like to achieve I wasn't really expecting a comprehensive answer. Even though I did not get a solution to my question, the answer was well formulated and even offered some alternatives inducing the effect the alternative would have to the print quality.
